Parent Training Program

Gaining Essential Teaching Skills and Empowering Parents Through A New Team-based Training Program

The CCDC is currently searching for parents who are interested in particiapting in a team-based training program specifically designed to help parents learn Appllied Behaviour Analysis-based teaching and behaviour manangement skills.  Our hope is to help empower parents by gaining more knowledge and skills about teaching children with Autism Spectrum Disorders and other developmental disorders.

What does this program involve?

Each team, which will include the parent(s), Child Psychologist, Senior Therapist, and Instructor Therapist will be involved in designing a highly individualized plan which will involve asessing the child's strengths and areas of need in order to teach new skills.  At the same time, parents will be trained in the basic concepts of Applied Behaviour Analysis.  Parents will progreess through a tiered system of learning new teaching skills while at the same time, applying these skills to simple individualized teaching programs for their child.

What is the structure of the program?

The structure of the program may differ slightly from client to client and month to month, however, the basic structure of the trainign program would involve:

1 hour per month of supervision from the Child Psychologist
1 hour per month of one-on-one training from the Senior Therapists on concepts to be learned within the current learning teir
3 hours per month of practical training with Senior Therapist. Instructor Therapist, parent and child present
Approximately 10 hours per week of teaching performed one-on-one with parent and child

The program may include workshops on a monthly basis on general ABA topics as well as offer space for parents to conduct a support group for other parrents within the program to share ideas and resources.

What will the program cost?

On a monthly basis, depending on hours utilized per staff member and if any extra time or assessment is needed, the program costs will be anywhere from $575-$650 per month.  The CCDC has applied to various foundations in the hopes of being able to offset some costs of the program -- we will know more in the near future about what funding might possibly be available (check www.4treatmentnow.com for more information).

What time committment will I need to give?

In order for the program to be effective, parents should expect to commit at least 12 hours a week of time (1-2 hours of training, and 10 hours of implementing the skills through conducting programming with their child). Note:  the 10 hours of parent-child programming can be done in any setting at any time that is convenient for parent and child (the Senior Therapist might recommend times of day that are more optimal for the child's learning, but learning can happen at any time!).

When does the program start?

We are currently imvestigating the demand for the service in this region. Unfortunately, if there is no demand or very little demand, we will not be able to fund the program.  If there is a high demand demonstrated within the next few months, we will begin as soon as possible.  The deadline for signing up will be December of this year, so at the latest, the program will commence in January 2011.

How do I sign up for the program?

You may sign up for the program by filling out the form below.  This will put you on our list of potential clients for the priogram.  You will then be contacted if or when demand for the program is reached to arrange an intake assessment.  During this process, we will address both yours and your child's learning needs and determine the appropriatemess of this particular program for you and your child (in some cases, we may recommend a different therapy model if we do not think this particular model is appropriate).  Once we have established the appropriateness of this model to your case and have completed the intake process, your program will begin.

If you are interested in the program and simply want to know more first before signing up, you may contact the Program Director by e-mail (tracy.miller@ccdcinc.ca) or by phone (519)-621-9100.  Please allow 2 business days to respond.

If you know of a parent who may be interested, please direct them to this website or you may distribute a copy of our flyer by clicking on the following link:CCDC Parent Training Pamphlet
